School History

Kelaniya Gurukula National College was started on July 1, 1948 with 14 monks and lay students. Sri Dharmaloka Maha Vidyalaya in Kelaniya, which had been running in Vidyalankara Pirivena, was moved to Waragoda due to a crisis that arose at that time, and the Gurukula Vidyalaya was started in the same Piriven area under the editorship of Professor Yakkaduwe Sri Prajnarama Mahimipa.

This school was originally started as an English school. Although English is the main medium of education here, national culture, local thought and Sinhala language literature were given priority in this school. To create a group of English-able scholars who are opposed to imperialism nourished by Buddhist values is the main purpose of establishing this college.

The presence of great pillars such as, Sri Prajnasara of Kiriwatthudu, Sri Prajnarama of Yakkadu, Pannakitthi of Kotahene, Pannakara of Natthandi, Siri Sivali Degammeda Sumanajothi of Bambarande, Vajira of Kamburugamu, Siddhartha of Batadu, Pannarathana of Galmuru, Mahinda of Pinangu were a great help to the college's progress.

In 1961, Professor Kotahene Pannakitthi was the managing director of the Gurukula Vidyalaya until it became a government school in accordance with the School Government Takeover Act.

On 27-09-1954, Gurukula Vidyalaya, which was till now governed by the Vidyalayankara Sabha, became a government-aided senior secondary school. On November 15, 1960, the school became a government school as per the Takeover of Schools Act.

There are many intellectuals, scholars, artists, writers, poets, doctors, executive government officials, businessmen and politicians who studied at Medathura Gurukula Vidyalaya and rose to the national stage and even gained international fame.

Sports organizations like Sinhala and English Literary Association magazines, wall newspapers, inter-college debating groups, dance, acting, singing and playing competitions, cricket, football, netball etc. were very helpful in developing and sharpening their various skills and artistic skills.

Since the early period, the total number of students was divided into four houses. Such as, Vijayaba, Mayurapada, Sunethradevi and Prathiraja.

"Pagna Udapadhi" is the motto of Gurukula Vidyalaya.
